Aitana Bonmati’s journey at Euro 2025 has been nothing short of remarkable – from a hospital bed to scoring the goal that sent Spain into their first-ever Women’s European Championship final.
After Spain’s extra-time win over Germany in Zurich, the 27-year-old midfielder reflected on her whirlwind experience:
“I could write a book about that,” she said, in response to a question about overcoming illness to become her nation’s semi-final hero.
Bonmati’s participation in the tournament was in doubt after she was hospitalised with viral meningitis just days before Spain’s opener.
Though she made a swift recovery, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner initially had to settle for substitute appearances in Spain’s first two group games.
But by the time the semi-final rolled around, Bonmati had clearly rediscovered her best form. In the 119th minute, she glided onto a pass from Athenea del Castillo, outwitted her defenders with a feint, and smashed the ball past Germany keeper Ann-Katrin Berger at the near post.
Spain End German Hoodoo
Despite Spain dominating possession throughout the match, Germany, under coach Christian Wuck, dragged the contest into extra time. For a long while, penalties seemed inevitable.
But Bonmati’s intervention changed everything.
“It was not easy for [Bonmati] at the beginning of the tournament but she has a special personality to be at the maximum level,” said Spain head coach Montse Tome.
Her decisive goal came from a smart run between defenders Rebecca Knaak and Franziska Kett. Receiving the ball on the turn, Bonmati managed to squeeze a strike into the near corner despite a tight angle.
Bonmati’s goal sparked wild celebrations among Spanish fans and players alike.
“When the ball was in, I started running and I saw the bench standing so I celebrated with them,” Bonmati said post-match.
“Scoring in a game like this one is super-special. If I can help the team write history, it’s very special.”
She also thanked those who helped her return to full fitness: “I was confident in my mentality and my physical situation. I wanted to get to this game at my best level.
“Thanks to all people who were next to me to help me reach this level.”
Looking Ahead to England
By defeating Germany for the first time in their history, Spain secured a blockbuster final clash against England this Sunday. It took nine attempts, but Spain finally broke their German curse to set up a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final.
“Today I feel we wrote history again. For the first time we were able to make the final of the women’s Euros and beat Germany, which we hadn’t in the past,” Bonmati said.
“We feel proud to be a generation of players to win so many things.
“Today we can enjoy. Tomorrow we have to start thinking of England.”
