Manchester United’s promising pre-season continued last night with boss Ruben Amorim admitting they looked like a “different team” after sweeping past Bournemouth 4-1 in Chicago.
Following on from the weekend victory over West Ham, United again looked sharp against the Cherries and dominated throughout. Goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu gave them a comfortable half-time lead with Amad Diallo and Ethan Williams adding the gloss after the break.
A Matthijs de Ligt own goal with two minutes to go offered Bournemouth a consolation but that did little to deter the growing sense that the United players are finally getting to grips with Amorim’s philosophy.
Amorim hails Manchester United’s increased intensity
The Portuguese said: “We played with intensity. We were aggressive and that is something that we need to improve from last season. We have better possession compared to the last game so they are listening.
“Of course, scoring first in the beginning of the games can change the confidence of the team. We changed some positions and you feel that they know what to do in different positions.
“It was a good test. We controlled quite well the runs of Evanilson and [Antoine] Semenyo one against one. Luke Shaw was also really strong. So it was a good day.
“It’s just a pre-season game, but the feeling is with the same players [it] looks like a different team and that is a good sign.”
Hojlund delivers for Manchester United
Hojlund’s goal and all-round performance was another major positive for Amorim.
The Denmark striker scored just four Premier League goals last season and looked lost at times. However, he has returned from his summer break carrying the air of a man determined to prove his critics wrong.
Amorim added: “The important thing, I think is that people focus on the goals and we suffer a lot because of the lack of goals.
“I think not just the goals, but the way he connects the play every time we have to kick the ball [long].
“The ability for him to hold the defender and to connect in support is helping us a lot to play better and we are playing better because he’s playing better.
“I’m really happy with Rasmus. I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the market. The important thing is that the strikers that are here are working really well, are improving, are helping the team and that is the most important thing.”
Next up for United is a clash with Everton in Atlanta on Sunday.
