Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is unsure if star edge rusher Micah Parsons will be available for the team’s NFL Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4.
When asked directly following Tuesday’s joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, Jones replied: “No, absolutely not. A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that?”
Parsons submitted a trade request on Friday, which Jones dismissed as part of the broader negotiations surrounding a potential long-term extension.
Since then, there has been no direct communication between Jones and Parsons – even though they were seen only a few yards apart during practice.
Asked when negotiations might take on a greater sense of urgency, Jones paused before adding: “I’m urgent.”
Parsons is entering the fifth year of his rookie deal, during which he’s set to earn $21.324 million under the team’s exercised fifth-year option.
Jones has pointed out that other star players, including quarterback Dak Prescott and pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, have previously played out the final year of their contracts or under the franchise tag before eventually signing long-term deals.
Although Parsons continues to participate in team walk-throughs, he hasn’t taken part in any practice drills.
During Tuesday’s session, he was seen chatting with former Rams offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth, who has served as a mentor figure for Parsons over the years.
He has remained silent publicly since making his trade demand.
Back in March, Jones indicated he believed both sides had reached common ground on key terms – including contract length, guaranteed money, and total value.
“A hell of a lot more than you think I did,” Jones said at the time, referencing the offer. He also mentioned “guaranteeing somebody almost $200 million.”
However, Parsons later asked that all future negotiations go through his agent, and discussions have since hit a standstill.
When questioned on whether Parsons should be the one to reopen lines of communication, Jones responded cryptically:
“Y’all are getting what’s in the mind or what’s in the said. This is a good time. He’s subject matter. What it is is what it is. We’ll work through it, or we will not work through it.”
