Barcelona are edging closer to receiving the green light to host Valencia on September 14 but with a reduced capacity, it has been reported.
The Spanish champions’ renovation of their Camp Nou home was supposed to be completed by the latter half of last season but delays have seen it continue into the 2025-26 campaign.
The local council have finally outlined a schedule for them to stage the game with Valencia albeit with a maximum of 27,000 fans, well down on the club’s anticipated 60,000.
Which parts of the ground will be open against Valencia?
Phase 1a, which includes the main grandstand and the south goal, will be in use for their first game back in almost 28 months.
Phase 1b, which includes the remaining side stand, will be next to be completed, raising the capacity to 45,000 before the north goal is finished, enabling 60,000 supporters to enter.
Phase 2 is scheduled for next year when the remaining work will be finished and the number of seats available increased to 105,000.
Barca must now prove to the city council that all the work has been done for them to provide the relevant safety certificates: a completion certificate, an environmental control certificate, and a permit from the Les Corts district.
Leaving Camp Nou has not proved a distraction for Barcelona
It has been a torturous process for Barca and president Joan Laporta but moving to the city’s Estadi Olympic Lluis Companys did not hold them back on the field with Hansi Flick’s side sweeping to a league and cup double last season.
They take on Como in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy on Sunday, a match staged at the Estadi Johan Cruyff – the home of the club’s reserve side, before playing their first three games of the new Liga season away from home.
They go to Real Mallorca on the opening weekend before also travelling to Levante and Rayo Vallecano.
