Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has called for Alexander Isak to report back to training on Tuesday following the striker’s two-week absence from the squad.
Isak has been keeping fit in Spain with his former club Real Sociedad, but Howe is keen to have him back on Tyneside as speculation over the forward’s future continues.
Liverpool’s £100million offer for the Sweden international was instantly turned down on Friday night, with Howe making it clear he intends to keep hold of his star striker.
Speaking in Seoul after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, Howe admitted the timing of the squad’s pre-season tour has complicated matters.
“Of course I’d like him to be, but whether he will I don’t know at this moment in time.
“We have been here, time difference, so other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.”
While uncertainty hangs over Isak’s immediate future, Newcastle produced a solid performance at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, coming from behind to secure a draw against Spurs.
Harvey Barnes cancelled out an early Brennan Johnson strike, and Anthony Gordon stood out with an eye-catching display.
Reflecting on the match, Howe said: “It was a good competitive game. We did not start well, but did very well to come back from that difficult opening where we conceded.
“I thought the first half we were better the team. The second half was more even.
“Overall I thought we got what we wanted, it was a good work out and touch wood no injuries.”
The game also featured an emotional moment as Newcastle’s players formed a spontaneous guard of honour for Heung-Min Son, who was playing his final match for Tottenham.
“It was instinctive and there was nothing planned,” said Howe. “But I think that speaks volumes for him as a player and a person. People recognise the way he played the game.
“It was great to see from both sets of players I was very pleased with my players. He is seen as one of the great Premier League players.”
Howe and Newcastle now turn their attention to bringing Isak back into the fold as they continue their preparations for the new season.
