Liverpool’s significant transfer spending this summer stems from extensive long-term planning, according to club CEO Billy Hogan.
Hogan says that securing a 20th English league title gave the club the confidence to operate like a global giant.
The club’s most recent signing, French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, arrived in a deal worth £79 million including add-ons.
That move has pushed Liverpool’s total transfer spend for the window to nearly £300 million. Meanwhile, departures including six players – among them Trent Alexander-Arnold – have brought in approximately £64 million.
While the scale of the investment marks a clear shift from Liverpool’s usual conservative approach in the transfer market, Hogan insists the spending aligns with the club’s sustainable financial strategy.
“It doesn’t just happen; it’s been years in the making,” he told The Athletic. “One of the things we’re constantly focused on is that ‘virtuous circle.’ Trying to run the club in the right way to ensure that we can generate as much revenue as we possibly can. That obviously helps in terms of being able to put more back into the team.”
He noted that judging the club’s spending based on a single window can present a misleading picture: “The difficulty is if you just look at one individual summer. That probably skews the data. There were a lot of comments made last summer that we didn’t spend enough…”
Hogan also pointed to the ambitions of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s American owners, who want to build on the success under new manager Arne Slot after last season’s title-winning campaign.
“We also recognise, having won the English league title for the 20th time, that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We want to make sure that we are behaving like one,” he said.
“Having massive global stars come and play at Anfield, filling out stadiums in Hong Kong and Japan, those are things we expect and want to do.”
Liverpool are currently on tour in Asia and will face AC Milan in Kowloon on Saturday before heading to Japan for a match against Yokohama Marinos.
Their Premier League title defence begins at Anfield against Bournemouth on August 15.
