Manchester City midfielder Rodri has suffered an injury setback and is unlikely to be fully fit until after the September international break, according to manager Pep Guardiola.
The Spain international, who won the Ballon d’Or last year, missed the majority of the 2024-25 campaign for City due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in September.
Rodri was a huge miss, with City slipping to third in the Premier League without their midfielder and going trophyless for the first time in nine years under Guardiola.
He did return to action in City’s penultimate Premier League game against Bournemouth as a substitute, while he was part of the club’s squad during this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States.
The 29-year-old came on asa sub in the last 16 against Al-Hilal but was withdrawn during the 4-3 defeat due to a groin injury.
“Rodri is getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal,” said Guardiola.
“He has trained better in the last few days. Hopefully after the international break, he will be really fit.”
City take on Palermo in their final pre-season game on Saturday evening, before their opening game of the Premier League season versus Wolves next Saturday.
They then face Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals.
“Hopefully in these games, he can play some minutes, but what is important is that he doesn’t have pain because we don’t want Rodri coming back injured. We will try desperately to avoid that,” Guardiola added.
“He has been training the last two sessions with us and that’s good.”
