Mason Mount says Manchester United’s priority for the season ahead is to secure European football, following a disappointing campaign that left them out of continental competition.
The upcoming season marks only the second time since the 1980s, when English clubs were banned from Europe after the Heysel Stadium disaster, that United won’t feature in a European tournament.
Their 15th-place Premier League finish last term, combined with a defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, means Old Trafford will be without European nights for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
“Europe is a massive, massive thing for us,” Mount said. “The Champions League would be amazing for us and as a group we want to be playing in that competition. But I’d say Europe. I think that’s the focus.”
Ruben Amorim’s squad will need a significant turnaround from last season’s showing, when they ended the campaign 23 points behind Nottingham Forest, who clinched the final European qualification spot via the league.
The club has already invested heavily in new attacking talent, spending over £125 million to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
Meanwhile, transfer speculation continues, with Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson both linked to United.
Reports have suggested that Alejandro Garnacho could be involved in any potential deal, though club insiders insist no move is close, and Villa have made it clear privately that Watkins is not for sale.
United are currently in the United States for their Premier League Summer Series tour, with matches lined up against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton.
While the squad travels, Garnacho, along with Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, are training separately at Carrington.
Real Betis remain interested in bringing Antony back after a productive loan spell, and Juventus are eyeing a move for Sancho, though they’ll need to offload players before making a formal approach.
