Liverpool have failed with an opening bid for wantaway Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
The Athletic report the Merseysiders have followed up an informal enquiry with a formal offer which has been rejected by Newcastle.
Isak is currently training on his own at former club Real Sociedad while Newcastle are on a pre-season tour of the Far East.
Isak not interested in extending Newcastle stay
Isak has scored 54 goals in 86 Premier League games since moving to Newcastle from Sociedad in August 2022, establishing himself as one of the top-flight’s elite centre-forwards.
He has three years left on his contract and The Athletic report the club have tried to persuade him to sign a new deal that contains a release clause for next summer.
However, the Sweden international has made it clear he wishes to leave and join Liverpool instead.
Newcastle initially claimed Isak was left out of the pre-season trip due to a minor thigh injury only for reports to emerge shortly afterwards that stated he wished to explore a move away from St James’ Park.
His actions have not gone down well with the Newcastle fanbase with a banner labelling the 25-year-old a “rat” hung outside the training ground yesterday.
Desperate summer for Newcastle
If Isak gets his wish he will join a stacked Liverpool forward line that has already been bolstered this summer by the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike – the latter a player Newcastle themselves tried to sign.
Ekitike is just one of a number of players to have rejected Newcastle over the past few weeks, with the list also including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Bryan Mbeumo and James Trafford.
The Tynesiders still want to bring in a new striker irrespective of whether Isak stays with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko reportedly on their wishlist.
Sesko is also wanted by Manchester United.
