Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up a bid for Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
The Spanish giants see the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner as a realistic target as they seek to give new boss Xabi Alonso the backing to reshape a midfield that has lost both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the last 18 months.
At 29 years of age, Rodri could offer the experience and nous to complement some of the club’s younger players, such as Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler and Franco Mastantuono.
Rodri quandary; move now or in 2026?
According to AS, Madrid are pondering two options: to make a bid towards the end of this transfer window, or to wait until next summer when the player will be entering the final 12 months of his current contract.
If they are to make their move prior to the end of August, it has been suggested they will make a cash plus player offer.
Fichajes claims Madrid are willing to send both Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo, as well as €40m, to the Etihad to try to persuade the deposed Premier League champions to sell one of their most important players.
The alternative is to wait a year, by which time Rodri’s value would have decreased and the player may be more open to the idea of returning to the Spanish capital where he played previously for Atletico.
Has Rodri fully recovered from ACL injury?
The situation is clouded further by Rodri’s fitness. He suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament playing for City against Arsenal in September 2024 and, following a lengthy lay-off, is still building up his minutes.
Neither City, nor Madrid, know exactly how he will perform when fully fit.
Pep Guardiola and new City director of football Hugo Viana have been strengthening the centre of the team’s midfield with the signings of Tijjani Reijnders and youngster Sverre Nypan. The club also snapped up Nico Gonzalez in the January window.
Kevin De Bruyne has left while there remains question marks about the long-term futures of Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic and James McAtee.
