Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr is heading back to the injured list and admits he is “worried” after sustaining an Achilles injury in last night’s defeat to the Kansas City Royals.
Five-time All-Star Acuna missed most of last season and the start of this with a torn left ACL but had returned with a bang, hitting .306 with 14 home runs and 26 RBI in 55 games.
He won’t play for the foreseeable future, though, after experiencing tightness in his right Achilles while chasing down a ball in right field.
Acuna didn’t want to take day off
Acuna admitted afterwards it was a concern and revealed he first felt the problem running the bases on Monday.
“It was hurting even more,” Acuna said after Tuesday’s 9-6 defeat. “I was kind of out there hoping they wouldn’t hit it my way, and of course any time you do that, they always hit it your way.
“I told them yesterday, and everyone said, ‘Take the day if you want it, you can have the day off’.
“I’ve missed so much time already through injuries, I didn’t want to miss any more time.
“They are going to examine me tomorrow, so we’ll see how it goes.
“I’m worried. It’s more pain, I feel it a lot when I try to put pressure on it.”
Hopefully Acuna will return in 10 days – Snitker
It’s the latest blow for a Braves side that have limped to a 45-61 record and sit 16 games behind the New York Mets in the National League East.
Manager Brian Snitker said: “It’s an Achilles thing, it’s going to take a while. He’ll go on the IL, and hopefully in 10 days or so it’ll clear up.
“I was worried that that was an oblique the way he reacted there. I don’t know, it’s just one of those things, you just have to deal with it. It’s not fun dealing with it, not easy dealing with it, but you just have to.”
