Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is close to completing a move to Villarreal, with the 32-year-old expected to sign a two-year contract that will keep him in Spain until 2027.
Partey, who left Arsenal at the end of June when his contract expired, has already undergone a medical with the La Liga side.
The prospect of playing Champions League football again is understood to have been a key factor in his decision to join Villarreal.
The Ghana international had been in discussions about extending his stay at the Emirates Stadium, but talks broke down over contract terms.
Partey originally joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for around £45.4m.
Over five seasons in North London, he made 167 appearances and scored nine goals, featuring both in midfield and occasionally at right-back.
Last season alone, he played 52 matches across all competitions.
The move comes against the backdrop of an ongoing legal case.
On July 4, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
He has denied all charges. The case stems from an investigation that began in February 2022, during which he continued to represent Arsenal.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5.
Should the deal be finalised, Villarreal will add a highly experienced midfielder to their squad as they prepare for the new campaign.
