The Jets and Justin Fields avoid disaster
After suffering a non-contact injury at practice earlier today and being carted off the field, Justin Fields was diagnosed with a dislocated right toe, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Initial reports implied that Fields had suffered a more serious injury.
The team said that Fields is day-to-day with the toe injury. Sources told ESPN that Fields will be ready to go for the team’s Week One matchup against former quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Quarterback clarity for New Orleans
Quarterback Jake Haener, who had to miss minicamp due to injury, will work with the Saints’ first-team offense starting tomorrow, said head coach Kellen Moore. New Orleans will be holding a three-way quarterback competition between him, Spencer Rattler, and second-round draft pick Tyler Shough.
“Just focus on the task at hand. Focus on your reps, your opportunities,” Moore said after today’s practice. “You can’t get too distracted that there’s other people a part of the competition. You focus on yourself… All these guys have faced adversity in their past from an NFL or college perspective. These guys know how to handle these things.”
More money for Dexter Lawrence
The New York Giants have added $3 million in incentives to defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence’s contract for the 2025 season, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Lawrence is expected to make $17 million this year on top of the new incentives.
The Buccaneers are looking into offensive line help
With Tristan Wirfs recently undergoing surgery, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have begun to look for outside help at the tackle position, head coach Todd Bowles said earlier today. Wirfs is expected to miss the start of the 2025 season.
“We’ve been looking, and we’ve been bringing guys in. We hadn’t settled on one yet, but we know from a depth standpoint, we’ve got to get some people in here pretty soon,” Bowles said after practice. “We’re trying to make one of those signings.”
The 49ers add another wideout
The San Francisco 49ers are signing wide receiver Quintez Cephus to a one-year deal, the team announced this morning. This comes after wideout Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of training camp.
