Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has issued a rallying cry ahead of the new season, declaring that the team is determined to bounce back after enduring their worst league campaign in over half a century.
United’s 15th-place finish last season marked their lowest top-flight result since their relegation to the second division in 1974.
It was a bruising year for a club of their stature, and new boss Ruben Amorim is under pressure to steady the ship.
Yoro, who has struggled with injuries since his move to Old Trafford last summer, spoke candidly about the pain of last season and the renewed motivation within the squad.
“When you play for Manchester United, you need to have the mindset of being the best version of yourself,” Yoro said.
“I think what we did last season was a mistake for us. When you’re Manchester United, you cannot be at this position. The fans know it, everyone knows it. I think we understand this.
“This season will be different for us. It will be like a revenge from last season. We need to do better.”
United’s preseason tour of the United States brought some optimism, with the team remaining unbeaten across friendlies against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton.
Amorim’s squad has since returned to Manchester to finalise preparations before their Premier League opener at home to Arsenal on August 17.
The club has also invested heavily this summer, with over £130million spent to bring in attacking duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
But with that spending comes scrutiny, and Amorim is likely to face significant pressure if results don’t improve quickly.
Yoro, however, remains defiant in the face of external criticism and believes the team is mentally prepared to rise above the noise.
“We are a big club,” Yoro said. “There are a lot of people that want us to fail and we know that. But there are also a lot of people that want us to do it, to do great things. We just focus on the fans, you know.
“We don’t care about what they say outside, about the media, everyone said bulls- about us last year.
“But I understand because we didn’t do really well. This season will be different, I hope for us. We don’t need to listen to this and just be focused on ourselves.”
